Background of the Study: Childhood obesity has emerged as a significant public health concern globally, with rising rates in both developed and developing countries. In Nigeria, the prevalence of childhood obesity is increasing, particularly in urban areas and among children of primary school age (Ajayi et al., 2023). Obesity in children is associated with a range of health problems, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases, which often persist into adulthood. Early intervention through education and lifestyle modifications is crucial to preventing the long-term consequences of childhood obesity.
Nurses have a critical role to play in addressing childhood obesity, especially in primary school settings where they can directly influence children’s health behaviors. In Kaduna State, many primary schools have integrated health education programs, but the role of nurses in managing childhood obesity within these programs has not been fully explored. Nurses can contribute to childhood obesity prevention through initiatives such as promoting healthy eating habits, encouraging physical activity, and educating parents and teachers about the risks of obesity. This study seeks to evaluate the role of nurses in managing childhood obesity in primary schools in Kaduna State.
Statement of the Problem: Despite growing awareness of childhood obesity, it remains a pressing public health issue in Kaduna State, with many children exhibiting poor dietary habits and insufficient physical activity. Nurses are integral to the implementation of obesity prevention programs in primary schools, yet their specific role and effectiveness in managing childhood obesity have not been systematically evaluated. This study will assess the involvement of nurses in managing childhood obesity in primary schools and the impact of their interventions.
